Cleaning and blocking of bocis yarn

What’s the point of fluffy-soft bocce yarn? It’s a great material for making cuddly amigurumi, or a warm sweater, hat or scarf. But it’s not enough to make a magical creation, it’s worth giving it the care it needs to keep it looking good as new for many years to come. There are two critical points to which you must pay attention. It’s like changing the oil in your car or periodically descaling your coffee machine.

Cleaning and drying your creations made of bocce yarn

Amiugurumi figurines: feel free to wash in the washing machine at 30 degrees. I recommend using a washing bag, so any zippers or velcro that might get caught in it will definitely not damage it. Feel free to use a centrifuge, but I don’t recommend a speed higher than 800 revolutions per minute (rpm). There is a danger that at higher speeds the filler in the figure may shift, deforming the mould.

Solid, non-punched garments e.g. sweaters, hats: you can also wash these in the washing machine at 30 degrees and of course I recommend using a washing bag here too. Don’t hang them up to dry, because although they are lightweight, they can stretch when wet due to their weight.

Put it on the dryer with as little “hanging” as possible or spread it out.
Perforated sweaters, shawls, scarves: these textiles are more susceptible to stretching due to loose loops and you should take this into account when drying. It is not recommended to spin dry even at 800 rpm. After washing, place it on a thick towel, put a thick towel on top and squeeze out some of the water. It’s important not to squeeze it, as it can deform the pattern. Then spread it out to dry.

Blocking creations made from bocis yarn

If it’s a new garment and you’re washing it for the first time, here’s another thing to consider. With a punched, broken pattern, the corners of leaves, curves, etc. may be slightly puffed up after the first wash. This can be prevented by placing the garment on a decorative cushion and securing the corners with pins, for example. This way you can dry it to shape and keep the beautiful pattern you have created. Because of its high cotton content, Bocis yarn has a good hold, it doesn’t necessarily need to be blocked with starch, but it will definitely thank you for drying it to shape.
